Arcata Elementary serves students from Transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade. AES students learn skills that will help them live in our increasingly diverse, globalized, and media-saturated society, as well as instilling a solid foundation in the arts. Students collaborate in a student-centered, active learning environment. AES incorporates technology skills throughout the curriculum with digital devices in classrooms, as well as a computer lab and technology teacher. AES offers diverse music instruction with band, orchestra, steel drums and choir; dance; a library; an outdoor classroom environment in the garden; and specials such as swimming lessons for students in the 2nd grade PE curriculum.
Sunny Brae Middle School, a California Distinguished School, is one of only three true middle schools in Humboldt County. SBMS has a modified departmentalized schedule in 6th grade with fully departmentalized 7th and 8th grades to facilitate high school readiness. Sunny Brae’s comprehensive academic and enrichment program includes an Accelerated Math track with Geometry, Algebra II and Math Counts; character education and social-emotional learning; Visual Arts; Band (Beginning, Intermediate, Jazz & Concert); Choir; Dance; Drama; Robotics and Chess. Sports include Golf, Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, and Track. Staff at SBMS support academic, physical, social and emotional needs of students as they move from childhood to adolescence.
